COMMUNITY AT THE HEART
Local Hero Nomination: Laura Hutton Named BBC Radio York Make a Difference Awards Finalist
Behind every thriving community are people who quietly give their time, energy, and compassion to make life a little better for others. In Boroughbridge, Laura Hutton is one of those people.
The owner of The Hut Dog Grooming has been named a finalist in the BBC Radio York Make a Difference Awards, recognising years of dedication to supporting local people, charities, and community causes. For Laura, helping others has never been about recognition.
“I just like to do some good for others,” she says. “We can lose sight of how lucky we are and how others may not have that luxury. If we all do a little bit of good, the world can be a nicer place.”
It’s a philosophy that has guided her for around a decade and inspired countless community projects. From organising collections for the Boston Spa Homeless Project to fundraising for Dementia Forward, Saint Michael’s Hospice, Boroughbridge Community Care, Boroughbridge Football Club and Alzheimer’s charities, Laura has become a driving force behind many of the town’s charitable efforts.
Her fundraising takes many forms. Boxing Day dips, charity car washes, duck races, Christmas markets, Jubilee celebrations, and BridgeFest have all helped raise vital funds, whilst collections have supported everything from Ukrainian families and animal charities to local schools through toy and shoebox appeals.
One particularly heartwarming initiative saw Laura organise the Christmas dinner for older residents who would otherwise have spent the day alone, creating companionship alongside a festive meal.

She continues to coordinate regular collections for the Boston Spa Homeless Project, stepping in whenever supplies run low or extra support is needed during the festive season. However, Laura is quick to point out that none of it would be possible without the people around her.
A single appeal to the local community often results in an overwhelming response, with residents dropping off bags, boxes, and essential supplies ready to help neighbours they’ve never met. It’s a reminder that community spirit is alive and well in Boroughbridge.
The announcement has been met with an outpouring of support from people across Boroughbridge, with many saying the nomination couldn’t have gone to a more deserving person. Friends, customers and fellow residents have praised Laura not only for the countless she gives to local causes, but for the kindness and generosity she shows without ever seeking recognition.
One community member summed up the feeling perfectly:
“Laura, your dedication, compassion and tireless work for our community never go unnoticed. This recognition is a true reflection of the difference you make in so many people’s lives. The fact that members of the community took the time to nominate you says it all. We are so proud to have you and incredibly grateful for everything you do. Good luck at the awards ceremony in September — we’re all behind you and hoping you bring that award home!”
It’s a sentiment shared by many. Laura’s nomination isn’t just a celebration of one individual; it’s a reflection of a community that comes together, supports one another and understands the power of small acts of kindness.
At Ure Life, we believe these are the stories worth celebrating. Laura’s nomination is a wonderful reminder of what can happen when one person inspires others to come together. Congratulations to Laura. Whatever the result in September, you’ve already made an extraordinary difference to Boroughbridge.
The BBC York Make a Difference Awards will be held in September at York Racecourse. Other local nominees include Norma Jenner from Kirby Hill, Autumn Boyle from Helperby, and Louise Prashad from Easingwold.
